Converting an OAUA Design into a UA Design

I mentioned awhile back about the proposition of converting one or more of my OAUA designs into a UA design, which could then be played like any regular hacked UA mod.

The benefits I see would be to possibly expose my own Oriental Adventures mods to more players, and also to possibly expose the Oriental Adventures Worldhack to more players.  Players who may not be sufficiently interested in OA to go through the trouble of installing the Worldhack, but might be curious enough to try out a hacked UA version of an OA mod.

I'm attaching my first attempt at such a conversion.  If one or more of you would like to try it out and see if the hacks seem to function normally, I may then UL it to the Archives.

I am also interested in any feedback on my docs, if you think something is worded badly, or something more should be added.

----------------------
Edit: These are the steps I used to convert an OAUA design into a UA-compatible mod:

1. Copied all files in OAUA's DEFAULT.DSN into a new folder.
2. Removed the PANIC.XXX file from the folder.
3. Converted that OAUA PANIC.XXX file to CKIT.EXE and then to a DIFF.TLB and added that to new folder. (Others may now shortcut this step by simply copying the DIFF.TLB file from one of my hans_oa*.zips and adding it the new folder).
4. Added the desired OA mod files (example: all files from Kitsune.zip) all into the new folder, overwriting any old.
5. Renamed the new folder as a *.DSN.
(6) Result ready to apply the design in UA using UAShell (or FRUAMM or UADAP).

Sounds amazing. Will you also be converting the modules made by Darius as well?

No.  I feel like that would be stepping on his shoes.

If folks find that my above conversion works well, though, I'll post the conversion steps I used.  I believe that would show the way for individual UAers to convert any desired OAUA mods for themselves.

I'm hoping Darius may become active here again, someday.

I take it OAUA does not function like other hacks then? Is it more complex to install/apply?

Because the hacks were so hugely different, and the milieu so different from UA (requiring so much different documentation), Darius & Brian decided it would be best for folks to make an extra copy of UA and turn it into OAUA (that is, it's own permanent thing).  Here's an introduction from the UA Newsletter #35:
http://frua.rosedragon.org/pc/uanews/uanl35/gl_oaua.htm
The following UANL contained many articles more fully explaining the OA Worldhack:
http://frua.rosedragon.org/pc/uanews/uanl36/index.htm

One example of a major difference would be that the OAUA combat icons use a different palette, so they can't be swapped out with normal UA icons.

My above conversion should be as easy to play in UA as any regular hacked mod, tho.

I hope you're doing well, Moni   :hello:

Oh ok, a whole new base for mods and adventures. Now I get it, thanks! :)

Here's some screenshots that might prompt a bit of interest, hopefully...

Definitely interested by the oriental setting. Just seeing the races and classes is cool ^_^

There are 3 fights in this particular mod.  The last two are consecutive, making it hard.  Having 2 Wu Jen magic-users in the party is advisable.  And players should feel free to adjust the difficulty as they wish.  My interest, right now, is just to find out if my conversion works properly.  Really, you don't even have to finish the mod, by the first fight you should find out if its buggy or not.

BTW, here's the reviews it got in its OAUA release:

Sans any feedback on this thread, I've gone ahead and converted all of my 4 OAUA designs into UA-compatible mods and ULed them to our Archives.  They are all up:

My deep thanks to our wonderful caretaker, Donnie!   :notworthy:

I will edit the first post of this thread to include the steps I used to convert these mods:

5. Renamed the new folder as a *.DSN.
(6) Result ready to apply the design in UA using UAShell (or FRUAMM or UADAP).

Nice nice nice! Can't say when that might be, but planning to try this out! Will give feedback when that happens.

hans

The one I would recommend starting with, to see if you care for the style I used in these mods, is hans_oa3 which converts Toudai-Oni (translation: "Lighthouse-Demon").  It's the shortest (a mere 15 minutes, if that).

These designs have limited interaction, little or no exploration, but are heavy on story and graphics.

Moni

Just reconfirming my interest in this. With the coming holidays I feel I'll be on my PC more and will hopefully get a chance to try this (and other recent offerings elsewhere on the forums).
