Adding Monk Class to an Existing Design

Trucker John

I know it is possible with FRUA to add the Monk class, and was reading the Manikus was working on that some.

On GitHub I ran across this:
https://github.com/manikus/1e_full_databases_for_Dungeon_Craft

This includes the Monk class.

Is it possible to add this to an existing Design playthrough? If so could someone please explain how to go about it.

Thanks

Jadefang

In the editor, go Database->Import-Export Databases..., and then import at the very least specialAbilities.txt, baseclass.txt, and classes.txt.

Dinonykos

Thanks, Jadefang, I just wanted to check this,too!  :like:

Trucker John

I am learning the DC file structure somewhat.

I am trying to add the Monk class to Mystery of Filos which is a 0.914 version of DC.
The baseclass.dat is way different in the old version of DC.
I guess what I'm asking is looking at classes the old 0.914 baseclass txt the fighters don't differ much from each other. How then does the game give each class their unique abilities? Is it stored in the EXE?

I managed to get Monk creation in game by appending the class.dat and baseclass.dat but it seems to be just a generic fighter. No special abilities such as unarmed combat.

I apologize for Monk this and Monk that, but it has always been my favorite class in RPG's

I had to remove all of the extra class information so that it would match the structure of 0.914 Dc

Dinonykos

I am not an expert for D&D classes, but I just looked into files for an 0.914 design.

For example, the traits.txt includes things like
\(BEGIN)
name = immune to disease
adjust = Paladin
\(END)

\(BEGIN)
name = heal by laying on hands
adjust = Paladin * (2*level)
\(END)

\(BEGIN)
name = cure disease
adjust = Paladin
\(END)

In spells.txt you can find code like:
\(BEGIN)
name = Entangle
...class = Cleric
cast by = Ranger + Druid
...

So my guess is depending on what you want to achieve, you can try to manipulate the different *.txt files accordingly and import them then via the editor. E.g., it should be possible to create spells only to be cast by monks. But I assume that special talents of monks would be difficult to implement into an old 0.914 design.

Thanks for replying.
Like you say the 0.914 is just too early a build to implement this.

The Traits.txt has some pretty interesting abilities that I could give to a monk, but the dat import on version 0.914 doesn't have a button to import  Traits.

I wish there was a Dat file editor that I could use and just edit the dat itself.

Dinonykos

Sorry, I forgot that the trait data file is not used in 0.914. I should have known since it was discussed earlier in the forum:
Quote from: manikus on July 11, 2023, 11:40:50 PMMovement shows 12 outside of Combat because the engine only uses Movement in Combat.

Races & classes: look at the races.txt and classes.txt respectively. After you make your changes, you have to import them into your design.

The traits file doesn't do anything - there is no way to import it anyways. It's a holdover from before we had a Special Abilities database (really long time ago).

You cannot change the attribute tables the way you can databases. You have to use functions to change each thing. If you give me an example, I can be more specific.

Well, after getting all of the changed classes, and baseclasses working I was able to create a monk in game, but,
Could not equipt any armor or weapons.
This is after adding monk to the items in the data file.

I decided to have a look at the 0.914 DC exe with a hex editor and all of the classes are hard wired in it.
So there really isn't a way in this version to make it work.

It's a shame the the monk class was put to the side in DnD 2e.

Well at least I can play the class with
FRUA using ghr00bas.zip and the trainer.

Dinonykos

I just checked one of my old designs (Snow Tigress) that was done with 0.914. It has a new class (Ninja) and characters with this class can equip items in game. So, in theory it should be possible.
I am not sure though how I achieved this back then and if the class has any specialities or just replaces another. Unfortunately, the old laptop I used back then (with Windows 98 I think  :Roll Eyes: ) is only randomly working well. Depending on how important this is to you and if noone else has a quick solution, I could try to check next week...

In DC designs from 2.0 upwards it should really not be a problem the way Jadefang mentioned above...

Thanks Dinonykos, it's no biggie.
I like to tinker. Maybe I'll try and make a design using the latest DC.

I really like the  Oriental Adventures hack in FRUA, been messing with it.
